CCD testbench at Universidad Complutense, Madrid

I designed and installed this testbench in the university’s LICA laboratory. A simple warm test camera using a CCD230 was also built to debug and prove the system.

The testbench was later used to characterise cameras used in the CARMENES and MEGARA spectrographs.

The testbench used a Quartz Halogen light source and a monochromator with interchangeable gratings to cover the wavelength range 370nm to 1100 nm.

The “diode mode” technique was used to measure CCD Quantum Efficiency (QE) to high accuracy.

Results for the CCD230 warm test camera are shown below. This was a front-side illuminated CCD and thus had limited QE due to lack of an anti-reflective coating.
